Strategic Bid Development Support
The Strategic Research Initiatives team provides bespoke support to UofG-led teams developing strategically important funding bids. While we do not have a definitive list of eligibility criteria for this type of support, these bids are normally led by UofG, involve team members from multiple UofG colleges, are high in value and/or are in an area of particular research strength for UofG.
Our Cross-Functional Teams bring together research professionals from across the UofG research ecosystem as appropriate for a particular bid. They may include knowledge exchange specialists, industry engagement experts, or research development managers with specific disciplinary expertise. They always include a research development specialist from the SRI team and a Project Coordinator (normally the Lead Researcher’s regular Project Coordinator).
Menu of Support
Teams can discuss their needs with the SRI research development specialist and decide on a bespoke package of support from our “menu” of available options:
- Schedule, with agreement of PI, weekly update meetings with CFT
- Utilise professional network to source competitor intelligence, and approach potential partners
- Prepare bid development timelines, incorporating budget signoff and formative peer review stage gates
- Partner with academic team to design efficient and effective project and team structures to meet complex and ambitious funder expectations
- Provide formative feedback on project and team structure, and on written application as it develops, including advising on relevant content
- Coordinate additional formative feedback from cross-institutional pool of experienced peers
- Coordinate requests for institutional in-kind support, including drafting of statement
- Identify and coordinate additional Research Professional support input to specific sections of the bid
- Edit individual sections to ensure bid coherence and clarity, and to meet word count as the bid is finalised
- Coordinate letters of support from partners and support negotiation of project-appropriate partner contributions
- Join academic team meetings to support negotiations on HEI contributions and other ‘challenging’ conversations
"I wanted to write to you to express how brilliant it has been working with SRI and the College team on the production of our UKRI Gambling Centre application. They have been incredibly supportive, have gone over and above the call of duty to contribute to our proposal, providing the necessary challenge to our thinking and producing strong elements for the proposal, which we are now incorporating. Their energy, enthusiasm and skills are notable (and infectious!) and their commitment to quality and belief in what we are doing is inspiring." - Professor Heather Wardle, Social & Political Science
Cross-Functional Team Support
Cross-functional teams are normally set up following horizon scanning and assessment of strategic funding opportunities, workload, and the value-add of a cross-functional team to a given bid. These assessments are conducted collaboratively between SRI, College Research Support Teams, and senior research leaders.
If you are developing a proposal that you think fits within the remit for cross-functional team support, you should contact your college research support office in the first instance to discuss. The research support team can then liaise with the SRI team to determine whether a cross-functional team should be established to support bid development. Please ensure you engage as soon as possible because bids that fall within remit are normally highly complex and require significant preparation to develop a competitive proposal.
