Background
The Career Framework was launched in June 2024 in response to feedback from our Colleague Engagement Surveys highlighting a desire among our Professional Services colleagues for more opportunities for career growth.
The Career Framework is designed to enable colleagues to drive their own development and career, with full support and guidance from their line managers, within an enabling landscape at the University of Glasgow.
Aligned with the World Changers Together: World Changing Glasgow 2025 and the People & Organisational Development Strategy 2020-2025, the Career Framework supports the University’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment where all colleagues can thrive and reach their full potential, regardless of their role or career stage.
Resources for Line Managers
As a senior colleague of the University of Glasgow, you play a crucial role in helping the University achieve its goals and embody the University’s values.
Our Ethos for development at UofG emphasises that colleagues should lead their own development. However, this journey is a collaborative one, and the support you provide as a line manager is essential.
At the University of Glasgow, we strive to create an environment where colleagues can actively pursue their development and career goals. Your role in the process is to offer guidance, support and to highlight relevant resources.
As such, in addition to the comprehensive suite of tools and resources to support colleagues drive their own career, the Career Framework includes guidance for managers on:
- Supporting career development
- Having effective career conversations
- Using coaching approaches
- Managing secondments

What is a Career Pathway?
A career pathway is a series of jobs and development opportunities that share common transferable skills and behaviours. It is a path that colleagues can navigate to achieve their desired career goals, driven by their own ambition.
Rather than simply moving from job to job, a career pathway provides a strategic approach to advancing a colleague’s career by intentionally seeking out roles and development opportunities that build upon their skills and experiences. By actively navigating a career pathway, colleagues can gain the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to achieve their desired end goal.
