Property condition survey to commence

Drones will be used to image exterior of University buildings to inform maintenance

As part of a programme of condition surveys on our buildings, we intend to carry out remote controlled ariel drone survey of all University buildings.

The surveys are intended to understand the condition of the main fabric elements including all roofs and all elevations of buildings. The aim is to use these surveys to inform maintenance and longer-term refurbishment of our estate.

The surveys will be undertaken at Gilmorehill Campus by Balmore Group Scotland Ltd and at Garscube Campus by Eye In The Sky Glasgow.

Please note that we are only imaging the exterior of buildings, whilst the drones may be visible from windows, we are not intending to look into buildings.  If you do have concerns then you may wish to close your blinds/curtains during the flying operations.

Please be assured that any personal details of building users and residents are not held by surveyors.

The intention is to commence the ‘on-site’ drone flying on w/c 7 March and carry out numerous flights during day time shifts and night time shifts. The reason there will be evening/night shift work is to capture thermal images to identify heat loss from the buildings and this is best completed out with daylight. This is because sunlight alters the thermal information and returns a skewed result.

The programme of drone flights has been put together on a priority basis following water ingress issues rather than a zone by zone methodology.

Drone flying is weather dependent and whilst the programme will be followed to meet project timescales, poor weather will stop all flying of drones to remove risk.

Should you have any concerns about the surveys, please do not hesitate to contact Zone Facilities Managers or Project Development Manager for the survey programme. The University’s Zone Map is available online.
