Antivirus
Standard staff desktop (SSD) PCs/laptops and student computer cluster PCs already have antivirus software installed. For PCs and laptops not managed by IT Services, Sophos Endpoint Antivirus is available.
For installation instructions, select your operating system below.
You must be on campus or connected to the campus network via VPN to download Sophos Endpoint Antivirus.
These instructions are for Windows 10.

Where is your Windows device?
On the campus network or connected via VPN
- If your computer already has antivirus software installed, remove this and restart your computer before you attempt to install Sophos Endpoint Antivirus
- Close all applications except your web browser
- Click here to download sophwin.zip
- Save the file on your local system in a temporary folder (like C:\Temp) and note its location
- Use a decompression utility such as 7ZIP to expand sophwin.zip
- In the expanded file structure, right-click savinst.cmd
- Select All versions of Windows: Run as administrator
- Once installation is complete, check the system tray at the bottom right of your screen and ensure the Sophos 'S' Shield is visible
Once installed, Sophos Endpoint Antivirus will update automatically whenever your computer is connected to the Internet.
Off-campus with no VPN connection
Before you can install Sophos on a PC that can't connect to the campus network, you will first need to complete one step on a computer that CAN connect:
- ON A CONNECTED COMPUTER: Click here to download sophwin.zip and save it on a USB stick
The rest of the instructions apply to your off-campus computer:
- If your computer already has antivirus software installed, remove this and restart your computer before you attempt to install Sophos Endpoint Antivirus
- Close all applications except your web browser
- Insert the USB stick into your system
- Use a decompression utility such as 7ZIP to expand sophwin.zip
- Navigate to the root of the expanded file structure
- Execute savinst.cmd by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator. If this option is not available, the account you are using is not an administrator and installation will fail. Switch to an admin account if possible.
- Ensure that the Sophos Shield is in the system tray at the bottom right of the screen
Once Sophos Endpoint Antivirus has been installed, it will update from specially configured web sites at the University of Glasgow whenever your computer is connected to the Internet. Any Internet connection will do: you neither need to be on campus nor to use the VPN Service.
You may find that updating will fail until you restart the workstation.
These instructions apply to macOS 10.14 and later.

- If the file does not download automatically to the desktop, take a note of the download location
- If the Install Sophos... window hasn't already opened, extract the installer by double-clicking the file sophos4osx.zip
- Execute Sophos Installer
Off-campus with no VPN connection
Before you can install Sophos on a Mac that can't connect to the campus network, you will first need complete two steps on a computer that CAN connect:
- ON A CONNECTED COMPUTER: Request a Sophos username and password by submitting a request in IT Helpdesk Self Service with the profile Software (Install/Configure/Upgrade) > Anti-Virus Software > Sophos
- ON A CONNECTED COMPUTER: Click here to download savosx95sa.zip and store it on a USB stick
The rest of the instructions apply to your off-campus Mac:
- If your Mac already has antivirus software installed, remove this and restart your computer before you attempt to install Sophos Endpoint Antivirus
- Close all applications except your web browser
- Insert the USB into your system
- If the Install Sophos... window hasn't already opened, extract the installer by double-clicking the file savosx95sa.zip
- Execute Sophos Installer
- The final step of the installation process suggests that installation has been completed successfully which, whilst true, is unhelpful because you still need to configure Sophos to receive updates...
- Select the Sophos Shield and choose Open preferences
- Select AutoUpdateand enter the following details:
- Primary server:
- Update From: Company Web Server
- Address: http://savwebb.gla.ac.uk/interchk4mac/escosx
- User Name: the username you received in response to your Helpdesk request
- Password: the password you received in response to your Helpdesk request
- Secondary server:
- Use secondary server: enabled
- Update From: Company Web Server
- Address: http://savwebc.gla.ac.uk/interchk4mac/escosx
- User Name: the username you received in response to your Helpdesk request
- Password: the password you received in response to your Helpdesk request
- Primary server:
Once Sophos Endpoint Antivirus has been installed, it will update from specially configured web sites at the University of Glasgow whenever your Mac is connected to the Internet. Any Internet connection will do: you neither need to be on campus nor to use the VPN Service.

- Close all applications except your web browser
- Click here to download savinstpkg.tgz
- Open with Archive Manager
- Extract to a suitable location like Desktop
- Open a Terminal window and be patient whilst you execute sudo ~/Desktop/savlinux/install.sh
- Once the 'Installation Completed' message appears your computer will be Sophos protected
