Moonie Collection

A collection of music composed by William Beatton Moonie (1883-1961), acquired through the initiative of Henry Farmer. It comprises compositions in various forms: 8 cantatas, 6 part-songs, 17 songs, 5 organ and 7 piano pieces, 17 items of chamber music, 12 orchestral works including part of a piano concerto, and 2 operas. The piano works and part-songs are all in published form, but in the other categories the greater proportion is in manuscript.

Moonie was born in Stobo, Peeblesshire, but his home throughout his life was in Edinburgh. He obtained a Mus.B. from Edinburgh University in 1902 and his working life was spent in teaching music in various schools in that city.

Moonie donated these scores shortly before his death in December 1961, and also gave a quantity of archival material such as programmes of performances of his music both in public concerts and broadcasts. The National Library of Scotland also holds scores and personal documents relating to Moonie.
