Ponting Bros: Ltd., was built on the site of Scarsdale House, which was built late in the reign of James II, founded by John Curzon, and named after his home in Derbyshire. Scarsdale House was hardly less famous in its day than weas Holland House. In 1713, the house was in the occupation of Lord Barnard, (Sir Christopher Vane). In the early nineteenth century it became a ladies’ school. Eventually it was again in the occupation of the Curzon family who continued there until the house was finally demolished in 1893, the house and grounds being acquired by Messrs. Ponting Bros., who built their business premises on the site.
