in-person visits

Booking Information

  • Booking requests should be made no later than 5 days before the intended visit, and should include reference codes/shelfmarks for the items you'd like to see - use the finding aids linked from ourDiscover page to choose your items.
  • For materials already held out on reserve shelves, shorter notice bookings may sometimes be available separate from our online booking system. Please email us at library-asc@glasgow.ac.uk to enquire.
  • Appointments are for one person only. If you’d like to bring someone with you, please book an additional slot. For group visits, please contract us at library-asc@glasgow.ac.uk for availability.
  • When our standard opening hours and services do not meet your needs, please contact us at library-asc@glasgow.ac.uk to discuss whether we can provide alternatives.

Facilities

  • Toilets and hand-washing facilities are available.
  • Lockers are provided (no money required).
  • Charging points available at desks for personal devices.
  • Eating and drinking:
    • A tearoom (used by readers and ASC staff) is available to use in our Thurso Street Reading Room, which includes a fridge, kettle and microwave.

  • Wifi is available at both of our sites:
    • Eduroam is available if you are a UofG student or member of staff, or if you're visiting from another institution that uses eduroam. 
    • UofG visitor for everyone else. No registration is required. Just connect to the UofG visitor wireless network using your device. 

Other than digital-access pcs, we do not have computers for reader access. If you require online access, please bring your own laptop or tablet.  

Reading Room Regulations

The following items are permitted:

  • Pencils
  • Notebooks
  • Phones/laptops/tablets

The following items are not permitted:

  • Foods or liquids (including chewing gum and mints)
  • Pens
  • Sharp objects
  • Bags/laptop cases/pencil cases
  • Coats/jackets/outerwear

 

  • All users are asked to be considerate of all other individuals within ASC spaces. Please keep conversations to a minimum wherever possible and switch personal devices to silent mode.  
  • Many of our collections may be photographed for personal study. Please ask the reading room supervisor if you wish to take pictures. 
  • Readers are not permitted to remove any collection items from the Reading Rooms.  
  • When you are finished for the day, please inform the Reading Room supervisor when you are ready to leave.   

 

 

Handling Our Collections

  • We ask that collection items are handled with clean, dry hands.
    • We’ll ask you to wash your hands before entering the reading room.
    • Please refrain from using hand sanitiser or hand cream before/during your visit. 
    • If you are wearing nail polish, we will ask you to wear gloves.
  • Follow the handling guidance followed by the Reading Room supervisor, and do not fold, lean on, mark, or damage any items.  
  • If you require any assistance handling any items, please ask the Reading Room supervisor.  
  • Use the required equipment as instructed by the reading room supervisor such as book cushions, foam cradles, snake weights, etc.  
  • Keep items in the order they are produced to you.  
  • If any item appears to be damaged, missing, or out of place, please inform the Reading Room supervisor.

Virtual Appointments

Please specify the items you would like to consult, up to a maximum of 3 items per appointment.
