All human raw materials are either grown or mined from the Earth. Changing to a low-carbon economy will need increased supplies of elements such as lithium and rare-earth metals. But we will also continue to need traditional metals such as copper, lead, zinc and gold.

This new Science Showcase reveals a selection of current applied geological research at the University of Glasgow, looking at the natural processes that move and concentrate such elements, how they behave in the surface environment and the biosphere, and how we might mine and process them using less energy, and with lower environmental impact.
