Our Venues
Where is The Hunterian?
The Hunterian is part of the University of Glasgow and has a number of venues.
The Hunterian Museum, Hunterian Art Gallery, Mackintosh House and Hunterian Zoology Museum are located on the main Gilmorehill campus, 3km west of Glasgow city centre. View our campus map.
The Hunterian Collections Study Centre and Kelvin Hall Showcase display are located at Kelvin Hall, a 9 minute walk from the Gilmorehill campus.
The Hunterian in the South is located in the Rutherford/McCowan building on the University of Glasgow's Dumfries campus, approximately 2 hours south of Glasgow and less than an hour from Carlisle.

Is there an entry charge?
Free entry to the Hunterian Museum, Hunterian Art Gallery and Hunterian Zoology Museum.
Entry to the Mackintosh House is £10/£6 concession. Free entry for children/young people under 18 and University of Glasgow staff and students.
Free entry to Kelvin Hall and The Hunterian in the South.
Is there parking?
Parking on the University of Glasgow campus is for permit-holders only on weekdays.
There is free parking on campus at weekends - enter the main University campus via University Avenue.
Bike parking is available on campus.
Can I book a group visit?
Our venues are open to all visitors during normal opening hours. While we don’t take group bookings, we would suggest that large groups contact us on 0141 330 4221 in advance of their visit.
Are there cloakrooms?
There are no formal cloakroom facilities available in our venues. Please avoid bringing bulky coats or bags when you visit.
There are free lockers on the basement level of the Hunterian Art Gallery.
Is there a shop?
The Hunterian Art Gallery Shop is located in the Hunterian Art Gallery. The University Gift Shop is located below the Hunterian Museum. The shops stock a range of books, gifts and accessories, related to The Hunterian collections and the University.
Is there a café?
The University has a number of cafe facilities on campus which can be used by our visitors.
Byres Road and Ashton Lane are a 5 minute walk away and offer a range of cafes and restaurants.
Do you have somewhere that we could eat our own food?
The Hunterian does not have a room that is suitable for eating in. Outside the Hunterian Museum is the Main Building Quad which has benches, this would be suitable on sunny days for bringing your own food.
Are buggies allowed?
Buggies are allowed in all venues except the Mackintosh House where the floors can only be accessed by stairs. If you visit the House, you can leave your buggy on the ground floor.
Do you have wheelchair access?
Currently, wheelchair users, or people with mobility impairments, can access all areas of the Hunterian Museum by lift. The Hunterian Museum has accessible toilets. In the Hunterian Art Gallery, access is by ramp to the ground floor and then by lift to the basement and first floor Gallery 2.
Can I book a wheelchair for my visit?
We are able to lend wheelchairs. There is no charge but booking is required. Please email Hunterian-Reception@glasgow.ac.uk or telephone 0141 330 4221.
Are dogs allowed?
Assistance dogs are welcome in our venues.
Can I take photographs or video?
You are welcome to take photos and videos for personal use but please don't use flash or bring tripods, monopods or selfie sticks. And please share any pictures and videos on your social networks #hunterian!
Professional photographers and film crews should contact Hunterian-Comms@glasgow.ac.uk for permission to film.
Can I hire a Hunterian venue?
The Hunterian Museum and Hunterian Art Gallery are all available for hire for various functions and events. For further details contact University of Glasgow Conference and Events.
Our Collections
Where are the rest of Hunter’s collections?
William Hunter's illuminated manuscript collection is in Special Collections in the University Library, along with his collection of printed books. Please email library-asc@glasgow.ac.uk with any enquiries.
How can I get to see something not on display?
We offer in-person research and teaching appointments in The Hunterian Collections Study Centre at Kelvin Hall, and remote viewings via visualiser and video conferencing facilities.
Please allow a minimum of 20 working days' notice when scheduling your appointment.
Email our Collections Management team to arrange an appointment.

How can I donate to the collection?
If you would like to enquire about potentially donating to our collection, please contact our Collections Management Team. Please give as many details as possible of the object(s) you wish to donate.
Can you identify and value something for me?
We do not offer a formal object identification service.
As an Accredited museum we are unable to provide estimates or offer advice on the value of objects or artworks. There are a number of auction houses across Scotland who offer this service.

You can support The Hunterian through a gift or bequest or by making a donation in our venues.
Internships, Placements and Jobs at The Hunterian
Internships and placements working with The Hunterian collections are currently open to University of Glasgow students. Any jobs at The Hunterian are advertised on the University’s website.
