Investing in impact: A new chapter for the IPDF seed funding scheme

At the University of Glasgow, we believe that the most transformative research happens when brilliant minds come together across borders. For over 18 years, our International Partnership Development Fund (IPDF) has been a cornerstone of our commitment to fostering global collaboration. Since its launch, the IPDF has supported 530 applications, enabling colleagues to connect with institutions in over 70 countries.

This year, we’re proud to unveil a refreshed model of the IPDF, one that is more focused, more collaborative, and more impactful than ever before—a model built on close engagement with you, our international partners.

A strategic pivot for deeper collaboration

Earlier this year, we launched a pilot call of our new IPDF model, designed specifically to support joint research initiatives with our existing international partners. This pivot reflects our belief that meaningful partnerships are not built overnight—they are cultivated through shared goals, mutual respect, and sustained investment.

"The IPDF is not just a funding scheme—it’s a statement of intent. A declaration that we believe in the power of partnership to change the world."

The new funding model is built around a simple but powerful idea: to directly fund collaborative research projects that not only advance academic knowledge but also deliver real-world impact. By aligning our funding approach with the models many of our partners already use, we aim to create a seamless, complementary mechanism that supports both parties in the collaboration.

Why this matters

International collaboration is not just a strategic priority for us—it’s a core value. Our research community thrives on the diversity of perspectives, expertise, and cultural insights that our global partners bring. Through the IPDF, we are reaffirming our commitment to these partnerships and to the belief that together, we can tackle the world’s most pressing challenges.

Selectivity with purpose

The IPDF is open for University of Glasgow staff seeking to work with a carefully curated list of priority partners. This selectivity is not about exclusion—it’s about focus. We want to ensure that the funding we provide goes to partnerships where there is already a strong foundation and a shared ambition to deepen collaboration. If your institution is among our priority partners, we encourage you to consider working with your colleagues at Glasgow to make an application in the upcoming call.

Proven impact, real results

The previous model of the IPDF has already demonstrated its value. One standout example is our partnership with the University of the West Indies (UWI). In 2013, an initial IPDF application supported work with the UWI, and subsequent applications further strengthened ties, deepening the partnership and sustaining the exchange of ideas. Today, collaboration continues through the Glasgow-Caribbean Centre for Development Research, including the launch of a joint Masters degree.

Building international partnerships takes time and trust. In 2016, an IPDF grant supported staff exchanges between the University of Glasgow and Malawi. Today, the University continues its close collaboration with Kamuzu University of Health Sciences in Blantyre, Malawi, through the pioneering Blantyre-Blantyre project, featured in the first phase of our Partnerships for the World campaign.

These are just two examples of how relatively small investments can lead to big outcomes—both academically and societally.

What’s next

We’re excited to announce that the first full call under the new IPDF model will open this summer. Details on eligibility, application timelines, and selection criteria will be shared directly with our partners soon.

In the meantime, we encourage you to start conversations with your colleagues and counterparts at the University of Glasgow. Think about the ideas you’ve always wanted to explore together. The IPDF is your opportunity to bring those ideas to life.

Let’s shape the future together

At a time when global challenges demand global solutions, we are more committed than ever to working with partners who share our vision for impactful, collaborative research. The IPDF is not just a funding scheme—it’s a statement of intent. A declaration that we believe in the power of partnership to change the world.

We look forward to seeing what we can achieve together.
