Russia’s war against Ukraine has shocked the world. Millions of Ukrainians fled the country, millions more are trapped and thousands of civilians and soldiers have been killed (both Ukrainian and Russian) as the humanitarian crisis continues to grow.

This webinar brought together an expert panel from the subjects of Central and Eastern European Studies and Politics, and International Relations to discuss key questions surrounding the war and its implications for Ukraine and Russia, but also for wider European and global peace.

The webinar was opened by Glasgow University Principal Anton Muscatelli who reiterated the University’s solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

Panel members:

  • Dr Huseyn Aliyev, Lecturer in Central and East European Studies
  • Yelizaveta Rekhtman, PhD Student in Central and East European Studies
  • Dr Joanna Szostek, Lecturer in Political Communication (Politics)

Chaired by Dr Ammon Cheskin, Senior Lecturer in Nationalism and Identity.

Among the topics discussed were the causes of the war; Russian brutality and the fight for freedom and democracy by Ukraine; Russia’s political system and foreign policy; and are governments around the world doing enough?
