Github is a software platform commonly used to store, track and collaborate on technical projects. It can be particularly useful for researchers seeking to share, manage or publish their code. The purpose of this workshop is to get people started with Git and GitHub, taking you through your first steps working with GitHub. There will be hands-on support from experienced data scientists as you work through setting up an account, installing and working with Git and GitHub

Content

This half day introduction will cover:

  • Installing Git
  • Basic command line interface tools
  • Fundamentals of Git and CLI commands
  • Signing up for Github
  • Cloning/Creating Github repositories
  • Integrating local files with Git
  • Pushing files to Github
  • README.md files

The course will run from 10:00 - 13:00. Mid-morning refreshments will be provided.

Who is this course for?

This course is ideal for people looking to get started with GitHub. No previous experience required.

Prerequisite knowledge and requirements

You will need basic IT skills (e.g., ability to save a file to a folder and find it again later). No previous experience with GitHub is necessary.

Participants will need to bring a laptop with powercable. You will need to be able to connect to wifi internet. Eduroam will be available for those with access but is not necessary.

Costs

The fees are as follows:

  • Standard Registration - £25
  • Reduced Rate Registration - Free

The reduced rate is for University of Glasgow staff and students, those with limited income or funding, or anybody for whom the full registration would be a financial burden.
