General Council Business Committee Elections 2026
The General Council met on 2 February and duly elected the following candidates to the GCBC:
1. Allan Mackintosh
Allan Mackintosh is a retired Learning and Development Manager and long‑standing member of the General Council Business Committee. A Glasgow graduate (BSc, 1981), Allan has been involved in University sport for more than four decades, including coaching and serving as President of Men’s Rugby.
He stands for re‑appointment to GCBC on a platform of strengthening the University’s focus on sport and student wellbeing, and contributing his extensive business experience from a 43‑year career in pharmaceuticals and consulting.
Allan has strong attendance at GCBC and notes his ongoing work to build links between Schools and the sports department.
2. John Corrie
John Corrie is a solicitor and Glasgow Law graduate (LLB Hons, 2001), with further postgraduate study at Cambridge and professional legal qualifications. First appointed to the GCBC in 2022, he has sought a second term.
John is committed to promoting the University’s reputation nationally and internationally, drawing on his experience in graduate recruitment and professional networks. He notes the need for Glasgow to raise its visibility beyond Scotland and credits GCBC members with driving positive change. He aims to continue challenging the University to be more ambitious and to strengthen its position among leading global institutions.
3. James Hughes
James Hughes is a Chartered Electrical Engineer with a career spanning the UK energy sector. A Glasgow engineering graduate (BEng Hons, 1992), he currently leads a specialist operational control team at Scottish Power, ensuring 24/7 continuity of electricity transmission and distribution.
He also serves as a pension trustee for SPPS, bringing governance and financial oversight experience. In his covering statement, James noted the financial pressures facing universities and emphasises the need for strong governance. He sought election to the GCBC to support the University through these challenges and contribute his professional expertise.
