Love is in the air

What is UofG good at, along with world-changing research, innovation, and ingenuity?

Our beautiful quads, cloisters and walkways – along with the unions! – have witnessed the blossoming of many long-term relationships, with the couples involved saying the University will always hold a special place in their heart for this reason.

We asked all of you campus Valentines to share your love stories with the UofG community – and here’s a small selection of them.

ANDY AND JENNY

Andy & Jenny Dunlop wedding

We met when I was the social convenor on the QMU board of management and Andy started as the new Events Manager for the building in 2007. After four months of seeing each other around the building and sometimes working together on club nights he eventually asked me out. We had three children, then in 2019 we finally got married in the University Chapel and had our reception in the Barrowland Ballroom. In 2020 we completed our family with our fourth baby. We now spend most of our time renovating our house and chasing after our team of children! (Image: courtesy of the family)

GILLIAN AND SCOTT

Gillian and Scott

Scott and I met in our first year of uni together – him doing Civil Engineering, me Politics. He proposed on his graduation day in the quadrangles in 2012 and we returned there for our pre-wedding photoshoot. We got married in 2016 – with my best friend, who I met in the queue for my very first Politics lecture, as my bridesmaid. We all spent a lot of time (and money!) in the QMU at Rev every Tuesday! It’s a very easy place to fall in love.  EWAN AND GILLIAN

Ewan and Gillian Lamont wedding

We met at Freshers' Week in 1998 when Ewan was SRC president and I was a Freshers' helper. We were married at the Memorial Chapel in 2006 and had the reception at the GUU! Best party ever! (Image: courtesy of the family)

JENNIFER AND FRAZER

Jennifer and Frazer wedding

We met in our first term at University, during lectures in the Boyd Orr Building. In 2001 we graduated and got engaged. We moved away for work, but both knew we wanted to return to Glasgow for our wedding. We were married in the University Chapel – Frazer got married in uniform, but changed into University tartan for the evening. 25 years on from when it all began, we now like to point our old haunts out to our children! JORDAN AND HOLLY

Jordan and Holly proposal cloisters

We met in 2014 while we were volunteering as GUSA Freshers' helpers and got engaged at the end of 2022. Jordan proposed here at UofG in the cloisters since this is where we first met, and had a photographer capture the moment. Jordan graduated from Medicine MBChB in 2017 and I graduated from Pharmacology BSc in 2016 then Stratified Medicine MSc in 2017. We now both live in Glasgow with Jordan training to be an anaesthetist at the QEUH and I work here at UofG. (Image: courtesy of the family)

PAMELA AND JOHN

Pamela and John graduating

Pamela graduated in 1998, the same year her husband John gained his PhD. Their two children were present at their graduation; in fact, their son Jonathan also graduated from UofG nursery the same year. They will celebrate their 32nd wedding anniversary later this year and say, "our time spent as the University as a family is one we all cherish". TOM AND ANNA

Tom and Anna cloisters

We met on campus, rather by chance, in 2014 through the ballroom dancing society. Anna was their secretary and Tom had just joined and was already roped in to teaching after our Freshers' event. Tom first remembers speaking to Anna at one of the classes held in the Memorial Chapel. We are now approaching our first anniversary after getting married in the same chapel in 2022, 30 years after Anna's parents were married there too. UofG will always be very special to us as the place we met and fell in love. SHEILA AND JOHN

Sheila and John Graham wedding

Sheila Haydock and John Graham met whilst at Glasgow University and were married in the University chapel on 21 August 1953. Their best man, Iain, was also a UofG grad. Sadly, John passed away in 2011. Sheila is 93 and at a UofG alumni meetup in Manchester she was the oldest alum, and had her picture taken with the youngest! (Image: courtesy of the family)
