Details for the ceremony day

Running time

Ceremonies typically last 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the number of graduands.

Tickets

Guest tickets will be provided to you by the graduand. The graduand will collect their two guest tickets at registration on the day of their ceremony and should ensure they provide the tickets to their guests before they make their way to Bute Hall.

Accessibility Information

If you or another guest require accessibility support, please speak to your graduand before the ceremony. Graduands can request accessible seating and notify the Graduation and Ceremonial Events Team of any access or support requirements in advance.

Information about accessibility, parking and campus access can be found on Access, Maps and Travel.

Maps & Travel

Plan your journey in advance and allow extra time for travel. Parking near the campus is limited.

Further information on travelling to and from the University can be found on Access, Maps & Travel.

Bag Policy

Avoid bringing large bags or rucksacks, as they are not allowed in Bute Hall. A bag drop is available on campus for storage. Note that bags may be subject to search. Please be aware that there are no cloakroom facilities on the graduation day.

Food and Drink

Hot drinks and alcohol are not permitted in Bute Hall but you may wish to bring some water.

Newspaper publication

If the graduand has opted to have their name published in the press, their name will be published in The Herald newspaper. This will be available to purchase in the Cloisters on the day of the ceremony.

Photography

Professional graduation photography will be available before and after the ceremony. Guests are welcome to accompany graduands for photographs.

Etiquette

To ensure everyone can enjoy the ceremony, we ask guests to keep celebrations to clapping and cheering. Please refrain from waving flags or banners, as these may obstruct the view of those seated nearby.

Post-ceremony Reception

There will be a post-ceremony drinks reception in the marquee in the East Quad. Guests can only enter with their ticket, which is provided by the graduand.

If you require more information regarding the graduation ceremony, please contact the graduand who can submit a helpdesk enquiry on your behalf.
