ESRC Festival of Social Sciences 2021

We are delighted to announce that the University of Glasgow is participating in this year’s ESRC* Festival of Social Science (FoSS) taking place from 1 – 30 November 2021, together with universities from across Scotland and the UK.

The FoSS is designed to promote and increase public awareness of social science and ESRC-funded research, and to enable social scientists to engage directly with the public – to increase awareness of the contributions the social sciences make to the wellbeing and economy of UK society.

The 2021 Festival has been transformed into a month-long celebration of the social sciences and many events are themed around social science and the environment, to reflect the COP26 climate change conference taking place 31 October-12 November, also in Glasgow.

University of Glasgow festival contributions

The University of Glasgow has a long and proud tradition engaging the public in our world leading social science research and has been a trusted Festival of Social Sciences Delivery Partner for several years.

Supported by our ESRC Impact Acceleration fund, we have previously taken over the famous Barras Market in the East End of Glasgow, spent a weekend bringing social science to shoppers at Ikea with our 'At home with Social Sciences' event, and worked with Thenue Housing Association to bring social science research into the heart of two local communities in the East End of Glasgow.

Last year, we participated in the first ever Virtual Festival, hosting 12 sessions, and this year we look forward to hosting another busy calendar of events – some virtual, some in-person and a few hybrid events that you can choose to attend in person or online.  This will allow everyone to take part in and hear about social science research at the Festival's many engaging events.

The College of Social Sciences FoSS Events Calendar 2021 features a bumper selection of 25 events open to the general public.

The ESRC is the UK’s largest funder of research on the social and economic questions facing us today. It supports the development and training of the UK’s future social scientists and also funds major studies that provide the infrastructure for research. ESRC-funded research informs policymakers and practitioners and helps make businesses, voluntary bodies and other organisations more effective.

The ESRC Festival of Social Science is an annual celebration of the social sciences and a key element of ESRC’s commitment to promote awareness of UK social science research to new audiences.
