The ESRC Festival of Social Science 2022 – Applications now open!

This year’s ESRC* Festival of Social Science (FoSS) will take place from Saturday 22 Oct – Sunday 13 November 2022 and the application form is now live.

The FoSS is an annual UK-wide celebration designed to promote public awareness of social science and ESRC-funded research, and to enable social scientists to engage directly with the public. It aims to increase awareness of the contributions social scientists make to the wellbeing and economy of UK society. Events range from exhibitions, lectures, and panel debates through to performances, guided walks and workshops.

The theme for this year’s Festival is ‘My local area’.

  • This is intended as a celebration of any and all aspects of social science research that relate to the area in which the University is based - this could be anything from its social and economic history to its dialect, its political landscape, its local businesses and innovators, the future of its local high streets or its public services.
  • The theme is linked to the place-based agenda, which is a priority area for ESRC and UKRI - we are encouraged to think broadly around this.

Events should target public and youth audiences. However, a few events with other non-academic groups such as policymakers, professionals, businesses, or third-sector organisations could be considered based upon our overall package.
