College of Arts’ historian named among new Royal Society of Edinburgh Fellows

A senior historian is among eight University of Glasgow academics announced as new Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh
A senior historian at the College of Arts is among eight University of Glasgow academics announced as new Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
Professor Lynn Abrams is among the 64 RSE Fellows for 2020 announced from across sciences, arts, education, business and public life.
Professor Abrams, Professor of Modern History, at the School of Humanities | Sgoil nan Daonnachdan, said: “I am delighted to have been recognised in this way by the Royal Society of Edinburgh in International Women's Week.
“In my research and Knowledge Exchange which focuses on the history of women and gender relations and on the history of child welfare I have always strived to be relevant and for my work to inform wider social concerns.
“Collaboration has been central to much of my research and this honour is also recognition of the mutual support and productive relationships I have experienced amongst the community of scholars and activists at the University of Glasgow and further afield.”
Professor Roibeard Ó Maolalaigh, Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Arts said: “On behalf of myself and the whole College I offer my warmest good wishes to my colleague Professor Lynn Abrams for her continued success. Her Fellowship represents excellence and outstanding achievement in her field and is richly deserved. My heartiest congratulations to her.”
They new fellows from the University are:

- Dr Katie Hampson FRSE, Wellcome Senior Research Fellow, College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences
- Professor Ralf Kaiser FInstP FRSE, Professor of Physics, College of Science and Engineering.
- Professor Margaret Lucas FRSE, Professor of Ultrasonics and Director of Centre for Medical & Industrial Ultrasonics, College of Science and Engineering.
- Professor Jill Morrison FRSE, Clerk of Senate and Vice-Principal.
- Professor Jose Penades Casanova FRSE, Professor of Microbiology, College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences
- Professor Aidan Robson FRSE, Professor of Particle Physics, College of Science and Engineering
- Professor Nicholas Watson FRSE, Chair of Disability Research and Director of Centre for Disability Research, College of Social Sciences/Institute of Health and Wellbeing.
The new intake of 64 fellows joins the current roll of around 1600, representing the full range of physical and life sciences, arts, humanities, social sciences, education, professions, industry, business and public life.
Those who are nominated, and then invited to join, have undergone rigorous assessment of their achievements, professional standing and societal contribution.
Fellows, who give of their time freely, play a fundamental role in enabling the RSE to deliver its mission ‘Knowledge Made Useful’, contributing to the cultural, economic and social well-being of Scotland and the wider world.
Honorary fellowships have been awarded to actor and activist Alan Cumming and historian Niall Ferguson.
Professor Dame Anne Glover, President of the RSE concludes: “The diverse expertise and experience of our fellows, means that, as an organisation, we are well-placed to respond to the issues of the day with clear informed thinking free from commercial or political influence.
“Our new fellows, who we look forward to welcoming, not only hold vast knowledge but also deep experience, keen judgement, boundless enthusiasm and a passion for promoting societal development and change. By using their talents as a collective, we can often unlock or inspire new potential and unearth fresh solutions to some of the most complex issues Scotland’s society faces today.”
