Author: Chen Zhenyu, MSc Global Economy student

My name is Zhenyu Chen, and I am currently pursuing a taught Master’s degree in Global Economy at the University of Glasgow. I am also proud to serve as a Student Ambassador. Studying here has been both academically rewarding and personally enriching. As a PGT student, life can be fast-paced, but I have gradually developed a routine that allows me to balance my studies, personal wellbeing, and social life. My daily schedule may seem ordinary, but it reflects the authentic and fulfilling experience of postgraduate life in Glasgow.

Morning

I usually start my day at around 8:00 a.m. Having a structured morning routine helps me feel organised and prepared. I make myself a simple breakfast, such as toast or eggs, and brew a cup of tea. This quiet time in the morning allows me to ease into the day at my own pace. After breakfast, I spend some time doing light household chores and tidying up my room. Keeping my living space clean helps me maintain a clear and focused mindset.

If the weather is nice, I like to go to a nearby basketball court to play. Exercise is an important part of my postgraduate life. It helps me stay physically active and also provides a great way to relieve academic stress. Playing basketball allows me to refresh my mind and recharge my energy. After exercising, I return home, take a shower, and then visit the nearby Morrison's supermarket to buy groceries for the day.

By the time I finish these tasks, it is usually close to midday. I often cook my own lunch, which is both healthier and more economical. Cooking has also become a relaxing activity for me, offering a break from academic responsibilities. After lunch and a short rest, I prepare to go to campus for my afternoon classes.

Afternoon

Most of my lectures and seminars are scheduled in the afternoon, which is quite common for PGT programmes. During lectures, professors introduce key theories and connect them with real-world economic issues, helping me better understand global economic trends and policies. Seminars provide opportunities for discussion and interaction, which deepen my understanding of the subject. During breaks between classes, I usually find a quiet place to review my notes or continue independent study. Sometimes, I also spend time chatting with friends, discussing coursework or simply sharing our daily experiences. When the weather is good, I enjoy walking around campus and appreciating the rare sunshine in Glasgow. These moments help me feel more connected to the university environment.

If I did not exercise in the morning, or if I finish classes earlier, I may go play basketball or swimming in the late afternoon at the UofG Sport facilities. Maintaining regular physical activity helps me achieve a healthy balance between academic work and personal wellbeing.

Evening

In the evening, I return home and prepare dinner. After eating, I often spend time reviewing lecture materials, reading academic articles, or working on assignments. Since PGT programmes are intensive, staying consistent with revision helps me keep up with the coursework. However, I also value my personal time. Sometimes I play board games with friends, or go for a walk and have conversations. These social activities help me relax and create a sense of belonging while studying abroad.

If I feel hungry later in the evening, I might prepare a simple snack before ending my day. Going to bed after a productive and balanced day gives me a strong sense of accomplishment.

For me, being a PGT student at the University of Glasgow is not only about academic achievement, but also about personal growth. I have learned how to manage my time effectively, live independently, and maintain a healthy balance between study and life. As a Student Ambassador, I hope that by sharing my daily routine, I can give others a genuine insight into postgraduate life. It is a journey that combines academic dedication, personal development, and meaningful life experiences.
