As a student at the University of Glasgow, I have utilised various academic and wellbeing support services and resources that have significantly enhanced my student journey. From academic support to mental health services, the university offers a comprehensive range of resources designed to help students succeed. Here's a detailed account of my experience with these services.

Academic support

One of the most valuable resources I have accessed is Student Learning Development (SLD). SLD offers workshops, one-on-one consultations, and online resources to help students improve their academic skills. Whether it's essay writing, time management, or exam preparation, SLD has been instrumental in helping students navigate the academic challenges of university life. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and approachable, making it easy to seek help when needed.

In my experience, coming from India, where theoretical and practical exams are an essential part of your learning, writing 4000-word essays was a bit tricky, and despite all my efforts, I failed to score a good grade in one of my subjects in the first semester, which put me in a lot of self-doubt and left me questioning my limitations.

However, after talking to academic staff, I was advised to attend SLD workshops for essay writing and even opt for a one-on-one session with their team to help identify areas of improvement. This resulted in building my confidence when it came to essay writing in the second semester and turning in better quality coursework.

Mental health and wellbening

The Counselling and Wellbeing Services at the University of Glasgow play a vital role in supporting students' mental health and wellbeing. The univesity offers free counselling sessions, workshops, and self-help resources to help manage stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues. The counsellors are compassionate and professional, creating a safe space for students to discuss their concerns.

Additionally, they organise various events and activities aimed at promoting mental health and wellbeing, which have been a great way to connect with other students and take a break from academic pressures.

When it comes to my own experience with them, it has proven to be extremely beneficial. At the beginning of my second semester, I went through a lot in my personal life, which started affecting my time in university. It completely stripped me of my confidence and self-worth. It felt like I was living on borrowed time, and everything was working against me.

This was when I decided to reach out to the well-being team to arrange some therapy sessions. At first, because there was a wait-list, it took some time to see someone, but I finally got in touch with a therapist who took regular sessions with me for 5 weeks and helped me bounce back to my old self, feeling more enthuasiatic and focused.

In conclusion, my experience with the University of Glasgow's support services and resources has been overwhelming positive. These services have not only helped me succeed academically but also supported by overall well-being. The University's commitment to providing comprehensive support for its students is evident in the quality and accessibility of these resources. I am grateful for the assistance I have received and would highly recommend these services to any current or prospective students.
