Biography

I joined the University of Glasgow in September 2025 to take up the Peter and Anna Kolchinsky Foundation Research Fellowship in Central and East European Studies.

Prior to this, I was based at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna, where I led the IWM's Ukraine-related programming as Research Director (2018-2022) and Permanent Fellow (2022-2025). I received my PhD in history from Yale University in 2018, with a dissertation entitled “Contested Confession: The Greek Catholic/Uniate Church in 19th Century European Politics,” and my AB in government from Harvard University in 2009.

I am co-founder and Head of Archiving of the Documenting Ukraine initiative, launched by the IWM in 2022 to support Ukrainian academics, journalists, and cultural professionals as they document the Russo-Ukrainian War. Since that time, the initiative has awarded grant funding to more than 500 independently developed and executed projects. Recognizing the lasting value of their work, we are building a digital archive to preserve the materials that result from these projects.

A historian of modern Europe with a particular focus on Ukraine, I seek to situate the Ukrainian past within broader historical narratives, focusing on linkages and entanglements that enrich both our understanding of Ukrainian history and how we conceptualize European history as a whole. I have a particular interest in the ways individuals’ lives and choices challenge established categories of historical thought, a phenomenon for which the complexities of Ukrainian history offer particularly rich examples. My current book project, developed from my doctoral dissertation, looks at the political valences of Eastern-rite Catholicism between the Habsburg and Romanov empires. It traces connections between the church now known as the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and Eastern Catholic congregations and initiatives across Europe and the Ottoman Empire, bringing together political decisions made in centres of power (Vienna, St. Petersburg, Rome) and the actions of individuals operating outside these formal structures.

Building on my work with Documenting Ukraine and earlier research on Ukrainian dissidents’ involvement with the Chronicle of Current Events, I am also developing a research project on practices of chronicling throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.

I am a member of the editorial board of the book series “Stories of War: A Series on Documenting and Archiving” published by Transcript Verlag. I also serve on the advisory boards of the online journal re/visions and the Ukrainian History Global Initiative.
