Media, Communications and Digital Society

Glasgow University has long been associated with the study of media and communications, through the Glasgow University Media Group first established in 1974. The Centre aims to analyse media content and explore its impact on public opinion and beliefs. Recent work includes Catherine Happer’s research on the media in the post truth world.

The School also hosts a growing group of researchers in political communication who address the role of mainstream and non-traditional media in political processes, particularly with respect to challenges to democracy and political opinion formation. Included here is the work of Anja Neundorf on democracy which seeks to identify new ways to use the transformative power of social media to develop and distribute new online educational content to promote democracy through civic education.

These themes also connect to our research on digital change, including Bridgette Wessels’ work on data literacy and Hayes Mabweazara’s work on digital media in the Global South.
