Young Women and Girls in Contemporary Scotland and Beyond

Girlhood Gang, a feminist collective of PhD researchers, have hosted their first event
A group of University of Glasgow PhD researchers, collectively known as Girlhood Gang, hosted their first event on 5 September 2018. The conference, Young Women and Girls in Contemporary Scotland and Beyond, was held across Glasgow Women’s Library and Olympia Social Research Hub, and opened with a keynote from SSCJR’s Dr Susan Batchelor.
Attendees with an interest in contemporary girlhood participated in lively discussions and creative workshops themed around working with and researching young women and girls. A number of University of Glasgow staff and students were in attendance, as well as academics from other institutions across the UK. Organisations represented included Girlguiding Scotland, Glasgow and Clyde Rape Crisis, Youth Link Scotland, The Empower Project, Glasgow Film Theatre and YWCA Scotland – The Young Women’s Movement. The event concluded with a closing keynote from Dr Geetha Marcus, Lecturer in Education in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Glasgow. In addition to these academics and organisations, the day involved young women themselves, who were invited to come along and share their experiences and perspectives.
The founding members of the feminist collective – Donna MacLellan, Amanda Ptolomey and Hannah Walters – received funding to host the event from University of Glasgow School of Education, CRADALL, SCCJR, MacFie Bequest and the University of Glasgow’s Sociology Small Grants Fund. They founded Girlhood Gang in late 2017, and all three focus on girl studies in their research. They hope to host more events in the future, follow them on Twitter for updates.
