GTA recruitment call for 2017/18 academic year

Opportunities are currently available for Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) to join the School for the 2017/18 academic year. The deadline for applications is Monday 5 June, 2017.

The School is looking for Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) to support the delivery of teaching and assessment across all five of our subject area pre-Honours courses (Levels 1 and 2), together with:
• Honours qualitative and quantitative methods courses;
• Pre-Honours Q-Step courses; 
• The College of Social Science’s core postgraduate research methods courses, including quantitative and qualitative methods, research design and social theory.

The ideal candidate

The GTA opportunity is open to all doctoral students in the School of Social and Political Sciences who are keen and committed to supporting learning and teaching, regardless of whether they have prior experience. For new GTAs training is provided by the University’s Learning & Teaching Unit, together with local training, guidance and support.

The School is particularly keen to attract applicants with strong quantitative research methods backgrounds. Applicants with experience of using R and SSPS would be especially welcome for related postgraduate courses, whilst applicants with a developed awareness of experimental research design theory and techniques would align closely with the syllabus for the new PG Research Design course that will be running in Semester 1.

The role requirements

GTAs make a vital contribution to the School’s learning and teaching experience by leading and facilitating tutorial groups of students, and marking and assessing formative and summative essays and examinations, providing feedback to students. In fulfilling these core duties, GTAs interact closely with students and work in partnership with academic and administrative colleagues on many aspects of course delivery. On some specialist courses, GTAs will also support and facilitate lab-based tutorials, demonstrating to students how to utilise key software and applicants.

GTAs commit approximately one day a week to GTA work (seven hours) over the a teaching semester. Within this time commitment, a GTA would normally be allocated up to four tutorial groups (which usually have no more than 14 students) on one course per semester that they would lead and undertake the associated assessments of these students.
