On 4 June a delegation from the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the European Centre for Advanced Studies (ECAS) visited the light and matter group at the Institute for Solid State Physics. ECAS is the central hub for scientific cooperation between Lower Saxony and Scotland and has been instrumental in funding exchanges between the physics partners at Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH) and the University of Glasgow since 2022.
During the visit, prospects for future scientific exchange were discussed with researchers and stakeholders. Ilja Gerhardt (LUH Hannover) and Jörg Götte (University of Glasgow) introduced their long-standing collaboration and the recently awarded grant "Enhancing Atomic Spectroscopy with Optical Angular Momentum", funded under the Zukunft Niedersachsen Lower Saxony–Scotland Research Innovation Scheme (Stream II, Excellence Track). The research combines the key strengths of the two groups: the light and matter group in Hanover conducts research on quantum sensing and quantum information with tailored light fields, while the Quantum Theory group in Glasgow specialises in quantum optics, structured light, and light–matter interactions.
