Professor Andrew R Long

Prof. Andrew R. LongHead of School of Physics and Astronomy

Personal Biography
I was educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge (M.A., Ph.D.) and moved to Glasgow in 1974. In 2001 I was appointed to a Personal Professorship.

Research interests

My early research work was in the the use of superconducting tunnel junctions as phonon transducers. After coming to Glasgow, I studied amorphous semiconductors for many years, specialising in hopping and particularly in frequency dependent losses (in which I retain an interest). About 1990 I joined the Nanoelectronics Research Centre to work on semiconductor nanostructures. Here are some current topics of interest:
Electronic transport in ultra-short lateral surface superlattices
Electronic state structure and transport in small semiconductor quantum dots
The use of quantum semiconductor devices in high performance circuits
Delta-doped indium based structures for fast FETs
MOSFETs on III-V semiconductor heterostructures

Current teaching (2006-07)
Physics of Solids (P2)
Solid State Physics 2 (P4) (with Dr Stephen McVitie)

Other Departmental responsibilities
Head of Department (2006-on)
