Biography

I am Dentist, holding a Master and PhD in Public Health. As a part of the Certificate I secured in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education from the University of Dundee, I developed a curriculum and assessment criteria (including formative and summative assessments) for a community dental health module and a leadership model for delivering a Master in Dental Public Health globally, and mainly in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).

I wrote and published different studies and reviews for assessing dental health risk factors and social health determinates in refugee settings and conflict areas in LMICs. My reviews were used as references for Cochrane reviews. The outcome of my research was published in international peer-reviewed journals and conferences and my publications in the International Dental Journal were of the highest downloaded articles in the world for the years 2018 and 2019.

Moreover, my article about Palestine School Oral Health Data with Professor Poul Erik Petersen was used as a reference for International Database in WHO/CAPP, website: https://capp.mau.se/country-areas/palestinian-territory-occupied/ & website: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29168573/. I also worked with the Evidence aid-UK as an intern in updating, providing feedback, running search strategies and summarising relevant reviews for Health of Refugees and Asylum Seekers evidence collection.

Throughout my academic and professional life, I was a Dental Public health Consultant in LMICs (Palestine). I participated in teaching Public Health, Dental Public Health, Advanced Epidemiology, and Community Health Care for undergraduate and postgraduate students in Palestinian and UK Universities (Public Health and Dental Schools). I also supervised the research dissertations and theses for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

I developed, designed and implemented multi-centre and interdisciplinary health research projects with WHO Collaborating Centres in UK and Europe. I built partnerships between UK and European researchers in higher education institutions and health stakeholders in LMICs and the Middle East region. Consequently, we secured different funds to implement projects that tackle social and health inequality among vulnerable groups of people (e.g. children, pregnant women and refugees) in countries suffering from long-lasting political conflicts. My key roles in these projects were Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator.

The outcome of implemented studies showed high efficacy in promoting oral health and eating behaviours and achieving a sharp reduction in dental caries and gingivitis occurrence.

Currently, I am the President-elect of the Oral Health Research Committee at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and a peer reviewer for different international health and education journals.
