Sunday the 23rd of February this year saw the first “Glasgow Dental School Football Cup” tournament take place for students, staff and recent graduates of the dental school. Taking place at Powerleague Glasgow, an ideal venue, the tournament consisted of 10 teams of five players playing firstly in groups, and then play-offs, to determine the winners of the esteemed title of champions.

Each year of the BDS course was well represented, with a staff team as well as 2 (and a half) alumni teams participating with matches refereed by three members of staff, including a former, fully-qualified referee.

The staff and alumni performed admirably on the day, however the victory ultimately belonged to one of the BDS4 teams: “Dynamo Kev”. The students met one of the alumni teams, “AVB”, in a tightly contested final, which ended up 2-1 to the BDS4 boys, crowning them the inaugural winners of the tournament.

The event was a great success, with all who participated enjoying the day and getting the bug for future tournaments. The hope is to hold the tournament regularly and perhaps expand to include more teams, with “Dynamo Kev” aiming to keep their undefeated run going. Thanks go out to all those who participated and helped on the day, and to Dental Protection for sponsoring the event.

If you are interested in taking part, please contact Grant Creaney at 1005005c@student.gla.ac.uk who will be organising another tournament for after the summer break.
