Promotions

A successful round within the School resulted in promotions to Professor for Duncan Lee, Senior Lecturer for Nema Dean, Colin Torney and Mike Whittaker and to grade 8 for Theo Papamarkou.

Dr Claire Miller wins 2018 AEYR Award

Dr Claire Miller has been awarded the 2018 Abdel El-Shaarawi Young Researcher’s Award "In recognition of outstanding contributions to environmental statistical and quantitative research with a special focus on water quality, and for strong interactions with other scientific communities and strong commitment to the Environmetrics community". Claire was presented with the award at the 28th International Environmetrics Society (TIES) conference in Guanajuato, Mexico, July 2018 after presenting the paper “Flow-directed PCA for monitoring networks”, which received the 2017 Wiley-TIES best paper award.

Grant success

Dr Claire Miller and Prof Marian Scott have been successful in establishing a collaborative project funded by the Environment Agency and the EPSRC IAA fund to investigate the implications of new river freshwater monitoring designs on evaluating water quality.

Celebrating Welsh research talent

The medals of the Learned Society of Wales were awarded on Wednesday 23rd May at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff in a ceremony celebrating achievement in academia.

The Society’s Dillwyn medals are awarded in recognition of outstanding early career research in three different academic fields: STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine); Social Sciences, Education and Business; and the Creative Arts and Humanities.

The Dillwyn medal for STEMM was awarded to our own Dr Gwyn Bellamy, Senior Lecturer in Mathematics. His research focuses on geometric representation theory, one of the fastest-moving fields in twentieth-century mathematics. At the core of Dr Bellamy’s is communicating research and mathematics, publishing in both English and Welsh. Dr Bellamy said “I am absolutely delighted, and honoured, to have been awarded the Dillwyn medal (STEMM). It is very gratifying to see that the Learned Society of Wales appreciates, and celebrates, the work done by early career researchers from Wales. In particular, in my case, I hope this will go a long way towards strengthening the ties between mathematicians in Wales and the broader mathematical community in Britain.”

Royal Garden Party, Holyrood Palace

Invited by the Lord Provost Eva Bolander, Dr Andrew Wilson attended the Queen's Garden Party at Holyrood Palace on 4th July. Holyrood estimates that around 27,000 cups of tea, 20,000 sandwiches and 20,000 slices of cake were served. The garden parties welcome people from all walks of life, and are thrown to recognise and reward public service that has had a positive impact in the community.

Dr Theo Papamarkou rated highly as reviewer for NIPS 2018

The conference and workshop on Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS) is a machine learning and computational neuroscience conference held annually. Dr Theo Papamarkou was one of the reviewers for NIPS 2018, meaning he reviewed submitted manuscripts to decide on their suitability for inclusion in the conference. Theo was evaluated by the area chairs as one of the top 30% highest-scoring reviewers for NIPS 2018.
