Welcome from the Head of School

October 2018

Dear All,

Welcome to the October 2018 Edition of the School Newsletter, the first of the new academic year, and my first as Head of School.

I would like to begin by thanking Prof Adrian Bowman for his time, work and dedication during his four years as Head of School, and I’m sure you will all join me in wishing him well during his well-earned sabbatical year. As hot-of-the press news, his work on the Franklin Expedition has just been mentioned in the latest Michael Palin travel book “Erebus: The Story of a Ship”!

But something I’ve already learnt in my less than two months as Head of School is the sheer enormity of the activities that take place under the aegis of the School, only a small fraction of which ever makes it to this School newsletter. So to staff – do send in news items – it is great to read about what everyone is doing.

I don’t want to repeat here news items that appear elsewhere in this newsletter, but I will make an exception to welcome new staff. I hope you have a happy, fulfilling and productive time in Glasgow.

And to returning students – welcome back, and to new students – welcome to the School of Mathematics and Statistics, and the University of Glasgow. I hope you enjoy your studies here.

And finally, as teaching gears up once again – good luck for the next academic year!

With best wishes,
Ian

Professor Ian Strachan
Head of School
