PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)

The PhD represents the highest academic achievement. It is designed so as to provide highly qualified and motivated scholars with the opportunity to pursue a research interest in depth over an extended period under expert supervision.

  • 3 years full-time or 5 years part-time, leading to the presentation and defence of a thesis of up to 100,000 words
  • dedicated supervision by experts in your chosen subject area
  • all incoming PhD students receive training in research methodology through a dedicated course, which must be taken during the first year of the programme. Further opportunities for research training programme will be available within the College of Social Sciences for the duration of the programme
  • entry in October or January
  • regular research events, including graduate research seminars, poster events, reading groups
  • access to exceptional library and online resources
  • free printing
  • conference funding
  • access to dedicated PGR Hub
  • opportunities for teaching assistantships and research assistantships may be offered, depending on the School of Law’s teaching and research needs
  • PhD students will normally be formally affiliated to one of the School’s research groups. This will create further opportunities for doctoral students to get to know academic staff and participate more closely in the group’s academic and social activities
  • it is possible to pursue the PhD by distance, as explained here
