The School of Law’s ‘100 voices for 100 years’ project, marking our ‘First 100 Years’ of women in law, will draw to a close this December. The digital exhibition brings together the ‘voices’ of 100 female University of Glasgow Law alumnae.  It is part of a larger project by the School to mark the centenary of the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919 which paved the way for women to become lawyers for the first time.

Madge Easton Anderson graduated from the University of Glasgow on 8 November 1919 with a Bachelor in Law (BL) and went on to graduate the following year with an LLB.  She was the first practising female law agent in Scotland and the first professional female lawyer in the UK. She later became the first woman to qualify in both jurisdictions of Scotland and England and Wales.

To celebrate Madge and women in law, the School of Law held a series of activities throughout 2019 and 2020.  This included flagship events such as the ‘Celebrating a Centenary of Women in Law’ event in April 2019, with guest speakers including Lady Wolfe QC, Dania Denis Smith (founder of the UK-wide First Hundred Years project), Amanda Millar (President of the Law Society Scotland) and Lady Hale.  On 6 March 2020, a follow-up event was held to mark International Women’s Day, reflecting on a year of centenary celebrations – and hopes for the next one hundred years.

Our ‘100 voices for 100 years’ project will continue into mid-December, with contributions from current Law students and a video interview with School of Law alumna First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.  To find out more about the project please visit: https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/law/100years/
