School of Law

CREATe and the School of Law are proud to launch a new partnership with BIICL (British Institute for International and Comparitive Law). The partnership includes the launch of a new executive programme Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) in AI Law and the Creative Economy.

Designed to support the careers of mid- to senior-level professionals working across law, policy, technology, and the creative industries, the PgCert responds to growing demand for agile, interdisciplinary expertise in technology law. It will explore the legal and regulatory implications of artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on the creative and cultural sectors.

Dr Jean-Pierre Gauci, BIICL Director of Teaching and Training, said: "BIICL is a leading provider of legal training underpinned by our globally recognised applied research. Our training for legal practitioners, judges, policy makers, regulators, legislators and business and civil society representatives addresses AI governance and regulation as well as a wide range of legal areas of direct relevance to AI and the creative economy. We are delighted to be offering accredited postgraduate courses and to be working closely with the CREATe Centre and the University of Glasgow Law School".

Professor Martin Kretschmer, Director of the CREATe Centre, said: "Investment from the AHRC, the ESRC and UKRI has enabled us to build essential research infrastructure for evidencebased digital regulation, strengthening the UK's capacity in a strategically important sector. This partnership translates that expertise into practice, supporting professionals and policymakers as they navigate the opportunities and tensions AI creates for the creative economy."

Sonya Sceats, BIICL's Director and CEO, said: "This partnership marks an exciting new chapter in BIICL's training programme and for BIICL's work on new technologies, enabling us to offer joint accredited study while building on our expertise in an area of growing economic and strategic importance both in the UK and internationally. We are honoured to be recognised as a trusted partner of the University of Glasgow and the CREATe Centre."

Professor Claire McDiarmid said: "Law has been taught at the University of Glasgow since 1451. It is exciting to see our global reputation extending into AI law and regulation. This executive partnership with the renowned BIICL institute brings the expertise of our flagship research centre CREATe to London, connecting our long-standing strengths with the legal challenges shaping the future of the creative economy."

The programme was launched at an event on Wednesday, bringing together colleagues from CREATe and BIICL to mark the start of this exciting collaboration and to discuss with regulators emerging research and trends in the field.

The PgCert will begin in September 2026 and consists of three courses with online preparatory learning and in-person teaching weekends in London.
