Women in Law: Where's the diversity? The first, the few and the future event - 13 June

Published: 17 May 2022

The Women in Law Project in collaboration with Diversity+ invite all those interested in issues of inclusion and representation to join us for a rally on Monday 13 June 2022, 6:00pm - 7:30pm to think collectively about the past, present and future for ethnic minority women studying, working, and active in the Scottish legal landscape.

Building on the recently published report on Racial Inclusion in the Scottish Legal Profession, the rally will provide a vital opportunity to hear from practitioners, the bench, academics, students and activists, who will offer reflections from different stages of career and engagement with the law, and point to ways forward for a Scottish legal environment that is diverse, open, and engaged. The evening will also provide an opportunity for networking and sharing stories of experiences in law.

To mark the centenary of the first 100 years of women in the legal profession in the UK, the Women in Law Project began documenting the stories of women across areas of legal practice and study. Those 100 Voices continue to grow and represent an ongoing effort to record stories that matter to the legal history of Scotland, stories that otherwise are so often lost or unacknowledged. The project team hopes that attendees are inspired by some of those stories, by our speakers and panellists, and that they might be willing to share their own stories with us.

We are delighted to announce that our keynote speaker is Naeema Yaqoob Sajid. Naeema is the founder of Diversity+, an organisation at the forefront of improving Diversity across the Scottish Legal and Financial Sector. She is a solicitor with over 20 years’ experience in the legal sector. She has experience in both public and private organisations, and is formerly a partner of a top ten Scottish law firm. Naeema is also a co-founder of The Scottish Ethnic Minorities Lawyers Association (SEMLA).

The keynote will be followed by a panel discussion featuring speakers including Brianella Scott, Karla Perez Portilla, and Amanjit Uppal. Further panel speakers will be confirmed in the coming weeks and contributions from the floor are encouraged and welcomed.

The rally will conclude with time to discuss and plan for the future as a collective (with refreshments being served).

The event will be held in the Senate Room, Main Building, University of Glasgow (on-campus parking available).

We look forward to seeing you on 13 June!
