Welcome to the Crichton Library
The Crichton Library combines the collections of the three partner institutions on the Dumfries Campus: the University of Glasgow, University of the West of Scotland, and Dumfries & Galloway College. It is located in the Dumfries & Galloway College Building and provides library services for all students and staff on the campus.
Under current Scottish Government level 4 restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Crichton Library is currently open for Click and Collect only. For information on the Click and Collect service, and other services currently in place to support your access to print materials at the Crichton Library, see the information below.
The Library holds books, journals, and audio-visual material to support all courses taught at Dumfries Campus. The standard loan period is four weeks. Most materials can be borrowed, with the exception of journals and reference items. In addition, some materials may be put on "short loan". These are kept at the service desk and are restricted to a 3 hour loan.
Details of all Crichton Library materials are available via Onesearch.
You can also use the University of Glasgow Library at the Glasgow Campus. You can do this in person, or by requesting items via the postal loan system.
The University Library provides access to extensive online collections, including textbooks, journal articles, major reference works, databases, reference management software and more. You can access these services 24/7 with your GUID and password. If you need help using these, please email the College Library Support Team (CLST).
To borrow from the Crichton Library you will need your University of Glasgow matriculation card which is also your Library card.
Always remember to bring your card with you, as you can't borrow anything without it!
Access to print resources from the Crichton Library collection
Click and Collect
The Library at the Dumfries campus is currently operating a Click & Collect service. Use OneSearch to find the books you need. The books can be from any of the campuses in the UWS collection (they do not need to be located at Crichton). Login to request the book(s) you want using your Glasgow ID and password. Your Glasgow ID is not your GUID; it is the ID issued to you by UWS IT staff at Crichton. When your books are ready you will receive an email confirmation with details of how to collect them.
Scans of print books
The library at Crichton is also offering a scanning service for print books. Please note that, due to copyright rules, the library can only scan one chapter from each book. Please email staff with details of the chapter that you require. Staff will scan the chapter and send this to you by email. The scans can be from any print books in the UWS collection. Use OneSearch to find the book details. Email your request to email@example.com.

Scan and Send service for print journal articles and book chapters
If you are working remotely and require access to items only held in print in the library collections at Glasgow, the Scan and Send service can support you. Staff can scan a copy of a journal article or book chapter held in the print collection and send it to you. To request an item:
- First, look for the item on Library Search and for both print books and journals, note the Shelf-mark (shown on the catalogue record beside the loan and location information). You will need this when you make the request.
- Be sure to check that your item is available in the Library and not on loan to another user before submitting your request
- Log in to your library account
- Choose the option ‘Request scanned copy of chapter or article held by this library. Then, choose either ‘Request a scanned article from a journal’ or ‘Request a scanned book chapter’. Fill in the required fields, including the Shelf-mark and submit your request.
- If you have any issues, please email firstname.lastname@example.org and staff will help.
Requesting the purchase of books that are not in the library collection at Crichton
The university has a process in place which allows you to request the purchase of books that you need for your studies or research that are not in the library collection at Crichton or available online via the University of Glasgow digital collections. You can request the purchase of print or online books. There is a process for both.
First, please check the UWS catalogue for print books – If the book is not at the Crichton library but is in the UWS collection, you can request it to be sent from another site. Use the request option on the catalogue to do that (you must log in). Currently there is a ‘click and collect’ service in place. You will get details about how to collect any book you request in an email. If there is no print copy available, please send a request to purchase a copy to staff on email at email@example.com They will purchase a copy of the book to add to the collection at Crichton.
To check online books, use the University of Glasgow catalogue – and search for the book, using the filter to limit results to online books only (see this guide for help). If there is not an ebook already available, please send your request to your College Librarian who will purchase a copy.
