Research interests

As a rheumatologist, my primary concern is the management of patients with chronic inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. To address the unmet clinical needs encountered at the patient's bedside, I perform minimally invasive ultrasound-guided synovial tissue biopsies. These biopsies allow me to study the primary target of the disease—the synovial tissue—at the bench.

My current research focuses on:  
 

  • Mechanisms of transition from psoriasis to psoriatic arthritis 

Although musculoskeletal involvement in psoriatic disease is preceded by skin involvement in most patients, we are currently unable to predict and prevent this transition, which ends in debilitating disease. The aim of our research is to identify the mechanisms and biomarkers of the transition from Psoriasis to Psoriatic Arthritis by assessing the immunological interplay between skin, blood and synovial tissue cells using high throughput technologies.

 

  • Characterization of the tenosynovium in rheumatoid arthritis and in the preclinical phases of the disease.

Tenosynovial inflammation has been identified as a preclinical feature associated with an increased risk of developing clinical rheumatoid arthritis. However, how tenosynovial inflammation is related to the development of synovitis and RA is unknown. A better understanding of the mechanisms of the transition from pre-RA to RA has the potential to provide therapeutic targets that may prevent the onset of the disease.  Our aim is to use minimally invasive US-guided tenosynovial tissue biopsy and single-cell omics and functional studies to characterize tenosynovium and synovium at pre-clinical stages to identify the potential mechanisms that initiate RA.
