Two UofG students have made it through to the UK finals of international science communication competition, FameLab.

FameLab encourages young scientists to find their voice and explain their research in a compelling and engaging way. Each year, the British Council organises national competitions in more than 30 countries, with the winners of the national competitions traveling to Cheltenham Science Festival for the FameLab International Final.

Hannah Bialic (left), an MSc student in Immunology at the Institute of Infection, Immunity & Inflammation, was the winner of the Scottish heats, while Erka Robinson, an MSc student in Brain Sciences at the Institute of Neuroscience & Psychology, was runner-up.

Both students impressed a panel of judges including Professor Bonnie Steves (Director of the Graduate School at Glasgow Caledonian University), Derek Shirlaw (Glasgow Science Centre and Glasgow City of Science), Dr Catriona Pagliari (Consultant Radiologist) and Ken MacDonald (BBC Scotland Science Correspondent).

The pair will now go on a residential training weekend with experts from science communication and the media, before attending the UK final in London on April 25.

Cheltenham Festivals produced the first FameLab in 2005. A partnership with the British Council since 2007 has seen the competition go international, with more than 9,000 young scientists and engineers participating to date.
