Biography

Ruth is workstream lead for Understanding Inequalities in the Inequalities in Health Programme at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Science Unit and co-lead of the SHW Data Science Research Theme. Her main research interests are inequalities in mortality and contextual and social influences on health over the lifecourse. Her research evaluates the impact of social policies on maternal and child health, using natural experimental evaluations. She has methodological interests in improving the use of routine data to analyse health inequalities, methods for evaluating complex interventions and natural experiments and the development and application of multilevel modelling methods.

Ruth is the lead for the Maternal and Child Health Network (MatCHNet). MatCHNet is laying the groundwork for policy evaluations using administrative data for maternal and child health. Her interests in Global Health are to develop small area deprivation measures. She co-leads the Inequalities and Justice work in the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Social and Environmental Determinants of Health Inequalities, working both with colleagues in Brasil at CIDACS and also with the Universidad Internacional del Ecuador.

Ruth is also interested in novel methods for public engagement and communication of research findings. She developed a jigsaw to communicate key findings from our Inequalities in Mortality Report with the aim of engaging people in discussions around inequalities in mortality. She has participated as a ‘meet the expert’ at the Glasgow Science Centre.

She is an active member of the Royal Statistical Society Glasgow Local Group which organises seminars and meetings for statisticians in the Glasgow area; and the Society for Social Medicine and Population Health – the leading society in the UK for population health research.

Research interests

Ruth has a BSc (Hons) in Statistics from the University of Glasgow and an MSc in Social Research Methods and Statistics from City University. She works in inequalities programme. Her current interests are inequalities in mortality in Scotland, contextual and social influences on health over the lifecourse, natural experimental evaluations and methods to deal with missing values in large routine data sets.
