Dr Joanna Inchley
- Reader (MRC/CSO Social & Public Health Sciences Unit)
Biography
I am a behavioural scientist and public health researcher, specialising in child and adolescent health. My current research focuses on adolescent mental health and the role of schools in health improvement, drawing on socio-ecological and systems perspectives. Other research interests include adolescent physical activity, sleep, social media use and spiritual health. I joined the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit in February 2019, and lead the Schools and Educational Settings Workstream within the Complexity in Health programme. Prior to moving to the University of Glasgow, I was Deputy Director of the Child and Adolescent Health Research Unit (CAHRU) and Senior Research Fellow in the School of Medicine, University of St Andrews.
Current projects
I am elected International Coordinator of the Health Behaviour of School-aged Children (HBSC) WHO Collaborative Cross-national study, the largest study of adolescent health and wellbeing in Europe conducted in collaboration with the World Health Organisation.
I am also Principal Investigator for the Scottish HBSC survey. Scotland first joined HBSC in 1986 and surveys have been conducted every four years since 1990. HBSC Scotland is currently funded by Public Health Scotland.
I am Director of the TRIUMPH Network. TRIUMPH stands for Transdisciplinary Research for the Improvement of Youth Mental Public Health and is one of 8 UK-wide mental health networks funded by UKRI/ESRC. TRIUMPH aims to facilitate new research collaborations to better understand and address current challenges in youth mental health.
I also co-lead the Scottish School Health and Wellbeing Improvement Research Network (SHINE), a national network which aims to support schools in addressing health and wellbeing needs through data driven innovation and systems change.
Education
My first degree was in Anatomical Sciences at the University of Bristol (1992) followed by an MSc in Health Promotion at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (1994). I completed my PhD in Public Health part-time at the University of Edinburgh (2009). My thesis investigated longitudinal determinants of leisure time physical activity in early adolescents.
