Biography
I am an academic GP with expertise in mixed methods research. I am the Academic Lead for the Deep End GP project in Scotland, a collaboration between academics and frontline GPs working in areas of concentrated socio-economic disadvantage. Within the School of Health and Wellbeing, I am co-lead for the Determinants of Health and Health Inequalities (DHHI) theme. I am also the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) representative for Obesity Action Scotland and I am on the RCGP Health Inequalities Standing Group.
Education
- BSc in International Health, University College London (2003)
- MBChB, University of Dundee (2005)
- MRCGP (2010)
- MPH, University of Glasgow (2012)
- PhD, University of Glasgow (2018)
I joined General Practice and Primary Care in August 2011 as a clinical academic fellow and, in 2013, was awarded a CSO Clinical Academic Training Fellowship to undertake a PhD on "understanding the role of primary care in the management of co-morbid obesity: a mixed methods programme".
I have been involved in undergraduate teaching at the University of Glasgow Medical School since 2012, including leading a module on international primary care systems for the Global Health Intercalated BSc and running the Student Selected Component (SSC) in Social Determinants of Health for three years. My postgraduate teaching is detailed in the 'teaching' section below.
Since 2010, I have been involved in the Deep End project, which represents GPs working in the most socio-economically deprived practices in Scotland, and I am co-author of
- Deep End Report 16 (austerity)
- Deep End Report 19 (access to specialists)
- Deep End Report 28 (GP recruitment and retention in deprived areas)
- Deep End Report 32 8 years of the Deep End project (8 years of Deep End)
- Deep End Report 33 Undergraduate education in primary care (undergraduate education in primary care in areas of socio-economic deprivation)
- Deep End Summary 34 Planning for 2019 to 2022 (planning for 2019-2022)
- Deep End Report 35 (Plans for advocacy and engagement by the Scottish Deep End Project)
- Deep End Report 36 (General practice in the time of COVID-19)
- Deep End Report 37 (COVID-19 vaccine deployment for marginalised groups in Scotland)

Research interests
I am interested in the interface between general practice and public health and in the role of primary care in mitigating health inequalities.
As such, I use mixed methods and realist research methods to explore issues related to:
- Impact of food insecurity and other social risk factors on health
- Access to health care
- Supporting health behaviour change
- Organisation and delivery of care for people with multiple long-term conditions (Multimorbidity)
- Implementation of new practices and technologies in primary care
