Dr Ben Young

  • Research Associate (Mental Health & Wellbeing)

Biography

Ben is part of a growing research group applying behavioural science to the early diagnosis and prevention of cancer. Before joining the University of Glasgow, he worked at the Department of Health Sciences, University of York.

He obtained his PhD from the University of Nottingham, where he contributed to studies of health behaviour in the Division of Primary Care, Division of Epidemiology and Public Health and as part of the UK Centre for Tobacco & Alcohol Studies.

Research interests

Ben’s research interests focus upon the study of psychological and behavioural processes in health and healthcare. He is currently working on a study to test the impact of innovative interventions on uptake of bowel cancer screening, funded by Cancer Research UK.

He previously contributed to the development of a diabetes self-management intervention using qualitative methods, evidence synthesis, expert consensus and co-design workshops.

His doctoral research explored behavioural responses to lung cancer screening. He presented the work at the 2017 World Conference on Lung Cancer.

He has researched other topics including 'nudge' interventions to improve efficiency and reduce waste in healthcare services, mass media campaigns to reduce tobacco and alcohol consumption, and the development of logic models to inform public health policy evaluation.

He is experienced in both quantitative and qualitative research methods and in different approaches to evidence synthesis.
