Multimorbidity in the context of neurodegenerative disorders

Published: 10 December 2022

A special collection of articles on 'Multimorbidity in the context of neurodegenerative disorders' has been published in Frontiers of Neuroscience.

Multimorbidity is often defined as the coexistence in a single individual of two or more medical conditions, either transient or long-term physical, infectious, and/or mental diseases. Millions of people are affected by variable combinations, related with age, ethnicity, income and gender. The high prevalence of multimorbidity in older people is of growing concern due to the progressive increase in human longevity, and the elderly often suffer from neurodegenerative conditions, which by themselves are particularly difficult to treat. Aiming at a contribution to the field, we invited neuroscientists engaged in experimental studies of ‘Multimorbidity in the context of neurodegenerative disorders’ to submit articles, from basic research to clinical and neuropathological studies, especially through novel approaches. The open access collection, published by Frontiers of Neuroscience, is composed of 12 original articles. We hope this set of publications will contribute to a better understanding of the current state of the art in the understanding of multimorbid neurological conditions. An editorial written by the 4 editors containing a preview of each article is available at: Linden R, Vassilaki M, Henderson EJ and Mohan D (2022) Editorial: Multimorbidity in the context of neurodegenerative disorders.
