HEHTA PhD student wins EADPH GlaxoSmithKline Research Award

Yulia Anopa, part-time PhD student in HEHTA, won first place at the European Association of Dental Public Health (EADPH) in September 2019 for her presentation on the economic evaluation of the Protecting Teeth
Yulia Anopa, a part-time PhD student at HEHTA and a research assistant at the Dental School, won first place at the European Association of Dental Public Health (EADPH) in Gent, Belgium, on 13 September 2019 for her presentation on the economic evaluation of the Protecting Teeth @ 3 (PT@3) randomised controlled trial.
Yulia competed with three other oral presenters for the EADPH GlaxoSmithKline Research Award and was awarded the first prize of €2,000. This is the second year in a row that the Community Oral Health section team of the University of Glasgow Dental School has come first.
Yulia’s PhD research project is a collaboration between HEHTA (supervisor: Prof Emma McIntosh) and the Community Oral Health section at the Dental School (supervisor: Prof Lorna Macpherson).
The PT@3 study aimed to explore the additional preventive value of fluoride varnish (FV) application at six- monthly intervals in nursery schools compared to supervised tooth-brushing in the same nursery schools (treatment as usual, TAU). The economic evaluation of the trial was a within-trial cost-utility analysis. The results showed that the FV intervention was dominated by the TAU. The probability that the FV intervention was cost-effective at the £20,000 threshold was 11.3%. The authors concluded that there was no substantial difference in total costs and QALYs between the two groups, and that applying FV in nursery schools in addition to supervised tooth-brushing seems not to be good value for money.
