Group chairs Hamish McLeod and Heather McLelland explain the role of this Athena Swan group in enhancing the support available to PGR and DClinPsy students, raising awareness of the challenges they face and seeking to mitigate these

The IHW Athena Swan PGR-DClinPsy group focuses on understanding and responding to equality, diversity, and inclusion issues that affect IHW doctoral students.

This spans a wide range including initiatives aimed at widening access to doctoral training, enhancement of support resources available along the training pathway, and raising of awareness within IHW about the variety of challenges faced by doctoral students.

We scrutinise and digest data from a variety of sources to get the clearest possible picture of how the Institute can work to create a more inclusive, diverse, and supportive environment for all doctoral scholars. Our group advises on improvements to the information provided to doctoral trainees (e.g. in welcome and induction packs) and we work closely with other Athena Swan subgroups to promote mentoring and the sharing of career development advice.

The committee has been enriched by the contribution of several new PhD student representatives in 2021 and we have been particularly focused on trying to identify ways to mitigate the challenges to doctoral training brought by the COVID19 pandemic. We are always welcome input new staff and students so if you are interested to be involved you can find out more via our webpage.
