Wellbeing of older workers (WOW) group

A busy year for this group culminated in the launching of an extensive online toolkit for older workers and the colleagues who line manage them, as group chairs Nicola McMeekin and Janet Bouttell explain...

The IHW Athena Swan wellbeing of older workers (WOW) group is a friendly and proactive group which represents and supports older workers in IHW, exploring issues relevant to older workers. However, you don’t need to be aged 50+ to join us!

In March 2020 we were joined by a Project Officer, Rebecca Robinson, who produced an online toolkit. This toolkit signposts the user to resources, within and outwith the university, relevant to older workers, with illustrations by our "artist in residence" intern, Yixuan Wang.

Resources include carer policies, retirement and pension guidance, information for line managers and material on health and wellbeing. Rebecca also organised two webinars, the first was a collaboration with Age Scotland titled "Age Inclusive Workplaces" the second was the launch of the toolkit. Our toolkit was launched in June 2021 and is available on our website.

The webinars and other short videos (welcome by co-chairs Janet Bouttell and Nicola McMeekin, carers’ webinar, introduction from the Equality Age Champion Professor Muffy Calder and outtakes – if you want a laugh!) are all available in the toolkit.

We are immensely proud of the toolkit, and it has been well received within IHW and across the wider university community. Our next goal is to work on career journeys for older workers, ensuring there is support and practical policies at all stages of a career journey which are relevant to older workers.
