Who is the Athena Swan Gender Sensitive Early Career Researcher (ECR) issues, aspirations and development working group?

As part of its guiding principles, IHW strives for an inclusive and supportive workplace for all staff and students. This continual process is at the heart of our culture and identity and has been formalised in the creation of the Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team (SAT) and 10 working groups to drive our equality and diversity agenda forward. One of these groups relates specifically to ECR issues, aspirations, and development.

In November 2019, Paul Mccrorie and Seonaid Cleare became co-chairs of the IHW Athena Swan ECR working group when Ewelina Rydzewska stood down after four years of championing our ECR community. We thought we’d take this chance to introduce ourselves.

The ECR aspirations and supports working group focuses on monitoring and addressing gender-related issues affecting representation, progression, development and success of all ECRs within IHW. We work closely with the IHW ECR forum (ECRF), and other Athena SWAN working groups including the Maternity, paternity, parental and carer issues and development and Promotions, reward and recognition groups to effectively support and enhance working experience for ECRs.

If you are a new student or member of staff and feel passionate about issues related to ECRs then please get in touch and become a member of our working group. Information about joining is provided as part of induction process and contributions to Athena SWAN are recognised in staff workload model and during annual reviews.
