Biography

I am a coastal geomorphologist. Over the last 20 years I have researched the changes to Scotland’s coastline. 

 

Research interests

My early work focussed on the coastal evolution of beach systems during rapid periods of relative sea level rise (the last 8,000 years).  Through work commissioned in my role at Scottish Natural Heritage (now NatureScot) I have commissioned many coastal change assessments.

In 2015, I developed and led the Scottish Government's Dynamic Coast project, which was published in 2017. This work was delivered by colleagues in the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences.  

In 2018, I managed the second phase of Dynamic Coast, with colleagues in the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences.  

Dynamic Coast provides a public evidence base, which has informed national and local government, land-owners and the public of the need to become 'sea level wise'. 

I'm still keen to explore how innovative coastal science can improve our resilience to coastal climate change.
