Abstract

Advances in methodologies and tools often lead to new insights into human diseases. Medical ultrasound has provided great opportunities in the progress of diagnosis and intervention research. In this talk, our recent studies on minimally invasive ultrasound for intravascular/capsule endoscopic imaging, as well as for neurostimulation are presented. In specific, a research platform has been set up to evaluate the high resolution ultrasound endoscopic applications. Dual frequency (36/78MHz) PMN-PT single crystal transducer was designed and fabricated to balance the imaging depth and resolution. A prototype device for evaluating the capsule ultrasound will be presented. Nice images of gastrointestinal tract were acquired by high resolution ultrasound. The test results have been demonstrated that the prototype device is able to offer image resolution better than 60 mm and that the layers within porcine small intestine can be resolved. In addition, the research on ultrasound neurostimulation in our group will also be presented. Minimized focal point for brain stimulation and retina stimulation with ultrasound are presented in this talk. These results suggest that ultrasound are promising in advanced disease assessment and treatment.

Biography

Dr. Weibao Qiu was born in Jilin Province, China. He received his B.S. degree from the Hefei University of Technology, Hefei, China, in 2004, and his M.S. degree from the State Key Laboratory of Precision Measurement Technology and Instruments, Tianjin University, Tianjin, China, in 2007. He worked at ZTE Corporation, China, as a hardware research engineer for two years after receiving his master’s degree. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from the Interdisciplinary Division of Biomedical Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2012. Dr. Qiu had been trained to design and fabricate high frequency ultrasonic transducer and system in University of Southern California before he joined in Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr. Qiu is the author and co-author of 9 authorised Chinese patents, and 17 peer reviewed journal papers. He is currently an associate professor at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. Dr. Qiu’s research interests are: a) Ultrasound endoscopy including intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) imaging and ultrasound capsule technology; b) High resolution brain flow imaging and functional imaging with micro-ultrasound; c) Non-invasive ultrasound neuro-stimulation.
