Research interests

Research interests

Education for democratic citizenship; gender and education; liberalism; higher education; deliberative democracy; cosmopolitanism; peace education; social justice.

My central intellectual project is a defence of liberal autonomy as a key aim of education. My teaching and research interests lie in the tradition of analytic philosophy of education, with a particular interest in normative political philosophy. I have pursued these interests mainly in the following intertwined threads:

  • a defence of the crucial relevance of liberal theory to understanding education;
  • defending liberal theory against attacks from Marxism, Fundamental Pedagogics (the brand of theorizing that was promoted mainly in the Afrikaans medium universities in South Africa under apartheid, and whose effects linger still in educational discourse in that country), postmodernism, and those multiculturalists and Africanists who oppose liberalism;
  • liberal feminism, especially in relation to education for democratic citizenship;
  • a critique of nation building as an aim of education;
  • deliberative democracy and education for cosmopolitan citizenship;
  • cosmopolitan justice.
