Mr Matthew Sutherland

Biography

Matthew Sutherland is a Lecturer in Teacher Education within the School of Education. Matthew has a strong interest in addressing social inequalities in education and employs large-scale data and quantitative methods to gain deeper insights into these critical issues.

Matthew started his career as a Teacher of Physical Education (BEd Hons, University of Edinburgh). He has taught in numerous secondary and primary schools across Scotland and Madrid. He possesses a wealth of international teaching experience as an Outdoor Educator (MSc, University of Edinburgh) and Expedition Leader, collaborating with schools in Switzerland, Morocco, Kenya, and Canada.

Matthew holds a keen interest and background in Applied Social Research (MSc, University of Stirling). His ESRC funded PhD research critically explores the narrowing of the secondary school curriculum and its impact on subject choices, qualifications, and the academic attainment of young people in Scotland.
