Biography
Dr Mark Peart is a Lecturer in Teacher Education, with a specialism in Primary Education Technologies, at the University of Glasgow. He is a Fellow of the Centre for Transformative Change in Schools (CenTCS). Mark currently serves as Programme Lead for the MSc AI in Education and holds the role of International Regional Champion for Europe within the School of Education’s Internationalisation team.
Mark obtained his BA (Hons) in Primary Education, MSc in Research into Teacher Training and ICT, and PhD in Education from the University of Extremadura (Spain). His doctoral research focused on the development of digital and socio-civic competences to promote digital citizenship education and youth participation.
He has extensive experience in teaching, assessment and module leadership across Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes in both UK and international contexts. His teaching and leadership contributions span curriculum and pedagogy, school organisation, digital technologies, educational innovation, and educational research. Mark also supervises undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations.
Mark has published an array of journal articles and book chapters and has an established profile of contributions to international conferences. He is co-author of an edited book, written with international colleagues, focused on school organisation and the challenges of education within a global and digital society. In addition, he acts as a reviewer for several leading academic journals related to teacher education, technology and education.
Prior to joining the University of Glasgow, Mark worked for nearly ten years as a Primary School Teacher within the Spanish education system, teaching children aged 6–12, predominantly in upper primary (P6–7). During this time, he held leadership responsibilities related to digital education and teachers’ continuing professional development (CPD). He has also worked as a a part-time lecturer in Initial Teacher Education programmes at the University of Extremadura.
Mark’s professional expertise and scholarly interests are centred on teachers’ digital and AI readiness, digital learning and teaching, reflective practice, pedagogical reasoning with digital technologies, and critical digital and AI literacy. His work also focuses on the promotion of digital citizenship and pedagogical knowledge for primary education contexts. He has a particular interest in embedding emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, into practice.
In addition, Mark’s scholarship explores teacher education, critical digital literacy, the curriculum for technologies, and the wider social, cultural, political implications of digital technologies and AI in education, including digital divides, transformative education and social justice.

Grants
- 2025-2026: Received, as Co-PI, the Teacher Education Research and Teaching Group Small Grants Funding for the organisation of the I International Symposium on AI in Education - Charting a course for ethical, responsible and critical uses of AI in learning and teaching. Total funding amount: £1500.
- 2025-2026: Received as PI, Teacher Education Research and Teaching Group Small Grants Funding for the development of a reflective toolkit for embedding digital technologies into practice for educators. Total funding amount: £800.
- 2024-2025: Received internal funding from the University of Glasgow's College of Social Science Horizon Europe Proposal Scheme 2025, to support leading or being a substantial partner in a submitted collaborative Horizon Europe research funding bid for the HORIZON-CL2-2025-01-DEMOCRACY-12 call. Total funding amount: £5000.

Mark maintains active membership in several scholarly and professional communities, including the Technology, Pedagogy and Education Association (TPEA), the International Study Association on Teachers and Teaching (ISATT), the Scottish Educational Research Association (SERA), and the British Educational Research Association (BERA). He is also a fully registered member of the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).
Mark serves as an junior ethics reviewer for the Scholarship of Learning and Teaching Ethics Committee within the University of Glasgow. He acts as a peer reviewer for academic journals, including British Journal of Educational Technology (BJET) and Technology, Pedagogy and Education (TPE), and is a reviewer for international and national conferences, including the European Conference on Educational Research (ECER) and the BERA Annual Conference. He is also a member of the International Advisory Board for the Horizon Europe project Strategies for Achieving Equity and Inclusion in Education, Training and Learning in Democratic Europe (STRIDE).
In addition, Mark serves as an External Examiner for Blackburn College, University of Lancaster.
